A study done in 2004, by University of Washington and University of Oregon psychologists, stated that by age seven, 65 percent of children have had an imaginary friend at some point.

Their research further indicated that eldest, or only children, are more likely to invent imaginary friends.  Boys are just as likely as girls to have one.
